Is Hospital Admission Really Cashless In Malaysia?

We need to understand what a cashless admission insurance policy means.

It means that the insurance company will issue a guarantee letter (GL) for your admission and you do not need to pay for the huge hospital bill first.

So if your plan requires you to pay RM 300 or RM 500 before admission but issue a GL for you, the medical card would still be considered cashless.

Here are 4 scenarios that you would need to pay:

  1. Hospital deposit – This is a small amount that you need to pay regardless if you have medical insurance, it will be refunded to you after you are discharged.
  2. Low deductible – Usually RM 300 or RM 500, depending on what your medical card offers, usually after paying this, the rest of the bill will be covered. Do note that the deductible amount is not refundable.
  3. High deductible – Ranges from RM 3,000 up to RM 50,000. This will be a fixed amount that you will have to bear depending on your policy. Usually, people who opt for this kind of plan either have extremely low monthly premium or their company insurance will cover the deductible for them.
  4. Co-payment – It is calculated by percentage. If the deductible is 20%, you will have to bear 20% of the hospital bill. This is usually paid after you are discharged.
  5. Reimbursement claims – Some items in the policy cannot be claimed using the GL. Hence you will need to pay first and then claim it later.
